  • Doo-Wop Shoo-Bop held over – New vocal group takes area by storm

Move over, Jersey Boys, “The Par Four” have utterly captivated local
audiences in Off Broadstreet’s latest musical offering, “Doo-Wop
Shoo-Bop,” currently enjoying an extended run at the Nevada City cabaret
theatre.  “In our twenty-five years in business, we’ve never seen
anything like this,” says the group’s creator, Off Broadstreet owner John
Driscoll.  “We’ve had to extend the run of the show twice.”  Playing to
consistently sold-out houses, Doo-Wop Shoo-Bop was to have closed on June
21st but is now scheduled to continue Fridays and Saturdays through July
    5th.

The new quartet’s huge success is due to their uniquely superior vocal
blend, combined with their engaging individual personalities and the
vibrant musical arrangements of keyboardist Katie Baker and imaginative
choreography by both Lyra Dominguez and John Driscoll.  Jed Dixon, JR
Lewis, Andrew Kerr and Isaias Acosta appear as “Howie,” “Dwayne,” “Mitch”
and “Carlos,” four doo-wop singing golf caddies at the 1966 US Open in
    San Francisco.

Says Driscoll, “The audiences are so blown away with the show and the
talent that they keep asking ‘Where are these guys playing next?’” After
“Doo-Wop Shoo-Bop” closes, The Par Four are planning to make themselves
available for hire for private events and parties both locally and
regionally.  Driscoll plans to market the show to other venues and has
his sights set on the group appearing at next year’s US Open in
Washington.  There are also plans for the show to return to Off
Broadstreet in the future, either in its original form or as a sequel.

Off Broadstreet Theatre will open its latest production “Doo-Wop Shoo-Bop” Friday. The show will run at 8:15 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through June 21 at Off Broadstreet’s Commercial Street location in Nevada City.

“It is June 20, 1966, the end of that year’s U.S. Open, and four singing golf caddies known as “The Par Four” are entertaining at the Tiki Lounge And Typhoon Bar in downtown San Francisco. During the course of their program, they share stories of their origin as a singing group as well as observations on the game of golf and life in general. Fast-paced and unique, the creative doo-wop group’s program provides plenty of laughs and includes two dozen hit songs from the early 1960s, including their own versions, which they say they have “Par-ified,” according to Off Broadstreet Theatre.

For this production, Jed Dixon returns to the Off Broad stage, joined by Andrew Kerr and OBS newcomers JR Lewis and Isaias Acosta. Live musical accompaniment is provided by veteran OBS keyboardist Katie Baker and choreography by Lyra Dominguez.

This is the third production in Off Broadstreet’s 25 year anniversary season celebrating “A Half Century of Awesome Music.” TIckets are $25 and available by calling 530-265-8686. There is a 2 p.m. matinee June 1 for $23 as well.
